Musical theatre for young performers in Darwin

Every Thursday afternoon in the Alawa Primary School library, kids and teens aged 8 to 18 learn to sing, act and dance together, then take it to the stage. No experience needed.

Director’s note

Why I started StageSong

I wanted a musical theatre opportunity for our daughter during her school years. Following my scholarship to the 2022 Junior Theatre Festival in Newcastle, I returned to Darwin and started StageSong, Darwin’s first dedicated musical theatre school for young people.

Our daughter ‘aged out’, as they say in the biz, before she had the chance to take part, but I can provide that experience to others.

Every Thursday, we learn songs from musicals, put movement to them and build them into a show. What matters most to me is the process: enjoying the work, supporting each other and finding the confidence to stand up and perform.

Reviews

What families say

“StageSong has given my kid an opportunity to explore and develop their musical theatre interests over the last 3 years and is the only group like this for kids in Darwin. The encouragement and positivity that Sian gives the kids every week carry over into other parts of life.

The end of semester shows are always fun, with the emphasis not on expensive costumes or sets, but on what can be found or created, which puts the spotlight where it belongs – on all the kids! They all get showcased and celebrated as performers of all levels of skill and enthusiasm!”

Rachael Pickering, StageSong parent since 2024

“Sian creates an amazing space where kids feel safe – important for those learning to explore performance, but essential if your kid is neurodivergent or feels like they don’t fit in other groups.”

Parent of an ADHD non-binary child

“StageSong is a place of happiness and as you act, it feels like you’re going into a story.”
